Canapé is a French word which actually means sofa or couch. It was first used as a culinary term in France in the late 18th century to describe the thin pieces of fried or toasted bread which served as seats for various savoury toppings. The term wasn’t used in England until a century later in the 1890s. The French must have a penchant for oddly naming things as ‘vol au vent’ literally means ‘flying in the wind’.
