What is a Spit Roast?
A Spit Roast is where the pig had been clamped and legs braced to keep the pig secure on the giant steel pole through the pig. This takes specialist care and training to spit the 50kg pig before cooking. A spit roast is a premium service and offers a fantastic feature and theatre as our chefs carve the whole spit roasted pig on display to your guests.
The historical fact about who first came up with the idea of roasting meat and turning it on a stick over a fire is lost in the mists of history. What is know is that before the idea of the spitted hog or roast came along ancient people would more than likely have dug a fire pit. The fire pit would be lined with combustible material, set it alight and then covered the hole over and left the meat to cook for hours while ancient people went off and caught the next woolly mammoth. Before you ask, we don’t do spitted woolly mammoth! We only do spit roasted hog, roast pigs, lamb and goat.
